VeraCrypt Secure File Storage Local & in the Cloud

Course Enrollment Status: Enrollment for this course is limited to 12 students.

Course Location: Silicon room at the HOA2 Arts and Crafts Center.

COURSE PREREQUISITES – Basic computer skills. This is open to both PC and MAC users. Mac users must know how to install software from alternate sources.

COURSE DESCRIPTION – One 3-hour class

This will be a “hands on” class so bring your working laptop and power cord. I will NOT have time to fix your computer. Bring a USB flash drive for course material. If you do not have a laptop, then you will be using the classroom Windows 10 PC’s.

If you do not bring a laptop then you will be using your USB flash drive to build an encrypted container.

Learn how to safely and securely encrypt your data. You do NOT want to store financial or sensitive documents in the cloud without first encrypting them.

This class focuses on the security of the data on your computer and in the “cloud”.  VeraCrypt encrypts your data and prevents anyone who does not have your passphrase from accessing them. It works like an electronic safe in which you can securely store your files.  VeraCrypt will protect your files by encrypting them with a passphrase. It creates a protected area, called a volume, on your computer or external storage device. This entire volume lives inside a single file called a container, which you can open (or mount) and close (or dismount) using VeraCrypt. You can safely store your files inside this container.

We will install the VeraCrypt software to your laptop and build an encrypted container for your files.  I will also show you how to install the portable version of this software to your USB flash drive. We will copy the VeraCrypt container to your USB flash drive.

Be thinking of a passphrase to use but not something out of a book. The password/passphrase should be at least 22 characters (spaces are considered as characters). If you can’t think of something I will show you how to generate a secure password with help from a password generator that I will provide. If you use a password manager (KeePass or LastPass) then you can use that to generate a good password.

COURSE MATERIALS - Class notes and free software download sites will be distributed during the class. Bring your own flash drive so you can copy these files and take them home with you. All programs (software) required for the class will be provided.

The student should have a personal Flash or Jump drive for transporting files between the classroom and home.
