About this event

Tor Browser Description

The Tor browser is considered a high security browser, no other browser can match its security.

You will learn how to install and use the Tor browser; Tor is based on the Firefox browser. This will be a “hands on” class so bring your laptop and USB 3.0 flash drive for course materials. If you don’t have a laptop then you will be using the classroom computers.

Have you ever wondered what the Deep web and the Dark web were all about? Would you like to be able to “surf” the web without being tracked by ad agencies or others?

We will discuss the differences between the Deep Web, the Dark Web, and the Surface web.

The “Surface” web is the public and searchable part of the internet that you can access with a regular browser.

The “Deep” web:  Refers to content on the World Wide Web that is not indexed by search engines, often hidden behind passwords, contains medical records, financial information, scientific records, legal documents, etc.

The “Dark” web: The “dark web” is an illusion. The term used often to speak negatively about encryption, in the context of encouraging encryption backdoors.

We will be using the free Tor Browser to explore the surface, deep, and dark web.

Tor is a browser that allows you to browse the internet anonymously and access websites that are not indexed by regular search engines. It works by encrypting your data and routing it through a network of volunteer-run servers, called relays, that hide your IP address and location. Tor also enables you to visit onion websites, which are only accessible through the Tor network and offer more privacy and security.

Tor, short for The Onion Router. The core principle of Tor, onion routing, was developed in the mid-1990s by United States Naval Research Laboratory employees, mathematician Paul Syverson, and computer scientists Michael G. Reed and David Goldschlag, to protect American intelligence communications online.
