COURSE DESCRIPTION – One afternoon (1:00 to 4:30) weekly for 4 weeks. This class is offered just once a year
Fewer than 5 percent of computer owners ever open the case of their computer to examine the inside. Many newer computing devices like smartphones, tablets and super slim laptops cannot be opened or repaired, even by experts. Desktop computers and some laptops still can be repaired with just a little experience. If you would like to see just what’s inside that thinking machine, this is a good way to start. We’ll show you all of the internal components of a typical desktop PC and look at some helpful software.
Why spend hundreds of dollars on a new PC when all you need is a moderate performance boost? Adding a solid State Drive (SSD), more memory, or a larger hard drive requires only simple mechanical skills and a basic familiarity with modular computer design. Almost any part of a computer can be replaced, and we will review the costs, considerations and methods involved. While it’s perfectly OK to just watch and listen, students can get a hands-on experience with common, useful and simple upgrades for desktop and laptop computers. Even just a little practical experience can be a big help!
Our final class will provide participants with the opportunity to completely disassemble and reassemble a working desktop computer. We will assist enrolled students with any personal related computer projects, even if this involves time outside the classroom. Each year a few participants elect to select components and assemble a completely new computer. You can learn a lot, get exactly what you want and maybe even save a little.
PREREQUISITES – Familiarity with a current version of Windows.
COURSE MATERIALS – Please bring a personal Flash or Jump drive for transporting files between the classroom and home. You might want to bring a few simple tools for the last class.
