Microsoft Edge was introduced in mid-2015 along with Windows 10 as a replacement for Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, Edge was an incomplete product at introduction and has failed to achieve significant popularity. A complete revision was announced in December of 2018 and was released on January 15, 2020.

Beta testers have been enthusiastic, especially among Google Chrome users, who find many familiar features present. Some planned features are not yet available, particularly in the data synchronization area. Builds are expected approximately every six to eight weeks, matching the same pace as Chrome and Firefox. Updates will be self-controlled within the browser, not via Windows updates.

All in all, this is a marked improvement for Microsoft’s Edge. In some ways it has a few features that Google Chrome lacks, even though the two browsers share the same Chromium open source code - as do 19 other currently available browsers.  Optimized for Windows 10, this version of Edge also runs on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, macOS and Android.

You can download it at your leisure, or simply wait for it to be automatically downloaded to your Windows 10 device via Windows Update in the next few months. When you do make the switch, your existing Edge favorites, passwords, form fill information and basic settings will carry over to the new Microsoft Edge without any action on your part. It can easily import that information from Chrome as well. It can use add-ons from both the Windows Store and the Chrome Web Store.

We will demonstrate the new Edge Browser and explore many of the new features and settings.
