Beyond KeePass Basics

COURSE ENROLLMENT
 - Enrollment for this course is limited to 12 students.

COURSE LOCATION
Silicon room at the HOA2 Arts and Crafts Center.

COURSE PREREQUISITES
 – Basic computer skills. Bring your laptop, if you do not have a laptop then you will be using the classroom PC’s. Make sure you have installed all your Microsoft and other updates before coming to class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
 – Two 75 minute sessions on how to install KeePass Password manager and configure the program. Bring your personal laptop so we can install the program on your laptop and you won’t have to try and install it at home.  We will also install KeePass to a flash drive so you can carry your passwords with you. I will show you how to synchronize your devices in the cloud with Plug Ins and import your passwords from your browser or other password managers. You will learn how easy it is to setup groups (Categories) and add entries to those groups. If you don’t bring or have a laptop you will be using the classroom Windows PC’s.

What is KeePass?

Today you need to remember many passwords. You need a password for the Windows network logon, your e-mail account, your website's FTP password, online passwords (like website member account), etc. etc. etc. The list is endless. Also, you should use different passwords for each account. Because if you use only one password everywhere and someone gets this password you have a problem... A serious problem. The thief would have access to your e-mail account, website, etc. Unimaginable.

KeePass is a free open source password manager
, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key file, so you only have to remember one single master password or select the key file to unlock the whole database. The database is encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (256 Bit AES and Twofish). We will add a one second delay to password entry to thwart brute force attacks.

Start thinking about a good password; make it more than 22 characters.
I suggest using a “pass phrase”, it can be something you made up, random words out of a book, etc. It has been proven that using four words are better than just using a string of 8 to 14 characters. Spaces in your password are the same as characters.

COURSE MATERIALS
- The student should have a personal Flash or Jump drive for transporting files between the classroom and home. We will be using your flash drive to install the portable version of KeePass. Bring your working laptop and power cords.
